The French Imperial Guard was equipped with meticulously designed gear to ensure efficiency in battle. The 1801 regulation cartridge pouch, a vital part of a soldier’s kit, was crafted from blackened calfskin and featured a layered flap system for added security. Beneath the main flap, a secondary safety cover protected the ammunition inside.
At the heart of the pouch was a wooden cartridge block, divided into three sections: two large compartments holding 30 paper cartridges in total, and a central section with six drilled slots for quick access during combat. Additional ammunition was stored in the soldier’s backpack, ensuring they were well-supplied for extended engagements.
Beyond ammunition, the pouch also housed essential gun maintenance tools, including spare flints, a horn or wooden practice flint, and a turnscrew—critical for maintaining the musket’s firing capability. This attention to detail and preparation made the Imperial Guard one of the most formidable forces on the battlefield.
This hand-painted figurine perfectly captures the realism and historical accuracy of Napoleon’s elite troops, making it an essential addition to any Napoleonic toy soldier collection.
